About BISP

Benazir Income Support Programme

In July 2008, Pakistan’s government initiated the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to establish a crucial safety net amidst economic turmoil. With soaring food prices and the global financial crisis casting a shadow, BISP aimed to cushion the impact on vulnerable households by smoothing consumption and fostering resilience.

This program, devoid of political bias or discrimination based on race, region, or religion, zeroes in on providing cash assistance to deserving women and their families, regardless of affiliations. Its overarching mission extends beyond immediate relief to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, striving to eradicate entrenched poverty and empower women for lasting change.

Enacted through parliamentary legislation, BISP operates under the auspices of the Prime Minister and President of Pakistan, spearheading efforts to:

  1. Strengthen the financial footing of impoverished individuals and their dependents.
  2. Craft and implement targeted initiatives to uplift the marginalized and vulnerable.
  3. Tackle poverty head-on and foster more equitable wealth distribution, particularly among low-income demographics.

At its core, BISP boasts an extensive database cataloging Pakistan’s most economically disadvantaged households, the fruit of a nationwide poverty survey. This invaluable resource guides policy formulation and informs social protection strategies, shared responsibly with both local and international bodies for collaborative research.

With a widespread presence spanning tehsil offices, divisional hubs, regional centers, and its headquarters in Islamabad, BISP’s operational footprint underscores its commitment to reaching those in need across Pakistan.
