Government Initiative: Free School Meals for Students

In a groundbreaking move, the Prime Minister of Pakistan has declared the provision of free meals to students in schools, ensuring no child attends school on an empty stomach. The initiative includes free breakfast and milk for primary and secondary school students.

A recent survey highlighted the prevalence of children in Pakistan experiencing food insecurity, with alarming numbers going without milk for two years and eggs for six months. Shockingly, around 40% of children attend school without having breakfast, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.

The first phase of this initiative will roll out free breakfast in approximately 100 government schools, with plans for nationwide expansion. The pilot will commence in Sindh, aiming to eradicate morning hunger for students gradually across the country. A dedicated website will be launched to offer comprehensive information about the scheme.

Registering for Free School Meals

Schools interested in participating in the free food program must register to receive free breakfast and milk for their students. Both government and private schools are eligible to enroll without any restrictions. The initiative will encompass all registered primary and secondary schools, with a focus on underprivileged regions to support children from low-income families.

Objectives of the Initiative

With nearly 60% of Pakistan’s population comprising youth and children, the initiative aims to address the educational needs and nutritional requirements of over five million school-going children. By providing free meals, the burden on impoverished families will decrease, leading to improved school attendance rates and educational outcomes.

The government recognizes the necessity for educational reforms and intends to introduce skill-based education in schools. Additionally, students will receive free medical check-ups and treatment, ensuring their overall well-being.

Education Scholarships

Furthermore, the government is set to offer scholarships to primary, secondary, and higher secondary students to alleviate their educational expenses. Additionally, free books will be distributed to students, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to education.
