The Innovative Step by Chief Minister Punjab to Provide Electric Motorbikes to Students
In a groundbreaking move, Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, has declared the distribution of electric motorbikes to students who face barriers in attending school due to financial constraints. By facilitating their commuting, this initiative ensures that no student misses out on enriching educational opportunities.
Eligibility Criteria for Electric Motorbike Allocation
The eligibility requirements for acquiring an electric motorbike are tailored to encompass students most in need:
- Students residing in villages who travel to urban areas for education.
- Students encountering significant financial hardships during their educational pursuit.
- Students attending schools and colleges located far away, relying on cumbersome modes of transportation like carts or buses.
The Inception of Electric Motorbikes
The conceptualization of electric motorbikes took place in 2019 with the necessary approval from the Government of Pakistan. A meticulous policy draft preceded its establishment, with manufacturing initiated in the Sundar Industrial Estate factory. Due to some complexities in producing certain components domestically, parts were sourced from China, and local fabrication complemented the assembly process. Subsequently, in 2020, actual production of these electric motorcycles commenced.
Advantages of Electric Motorbikes
Maryam Nawaz underscored the necessity to empower struggling students studying in colleges by offering electric motorbikes to improve their transportation convenience and ultimately enhance their focus on academic endeavors. With the advent of electric motorcycles being manufactured domestically, students can embark on their journeys post a quick charge.
Cost-Efficiency of Electric Bikes
The economic advantages of electric bikes are compelling. Traditional petrol-fueled bikes incur substantial daily expenses. In contrast, electric bikes offer substantial savings. By charging the bike once a day, at a nominal cost of 30 to 35 rupees, students can save up to 4 thousand rupees every month. This transition can accumulate to staggering savings of 48 thousand rupees per year.
Features of Electric Motorbikes
Electric motorbikes boast several user-friendly features that cater to the diverse needs of students:
- No petrol expenditure involved.
- Efficient performance suitable for city commuting.
- Eliminates the need for frequent oil changes.
- Equipped with BLD motor for enhanced travel comfort.
- No gear system, offering seamless acceleration.
- Sleek design without a conventional silencer.
- No chain mechanism, simplifying maintenance.
Empowering Students through Electric Mobility
The initiative aims to foster sustainable transportation practices by promoting electric vehicles among students, fostering an eco-conscious ethos. To facilitate access, the Punjab government collaborates with students to introduce a financing program where electric bikes can be acquired under favorable terms of two-year installment plans at a modest six percent interest rate, ensuring affordability and accessibility.
